Cloister Letters are associated with William Morris, as his typographic designs were influenced by and paid homage to medieval lettering traditions and can be considered an integral part of his broader artistic and design legacy.

Morris established the Kelmscott Press in 1891, which aimed to create high-quality books with meticulous attention to detail, including typography. He collaborated with prominent typographers of the time, such as Emery Walker and Sir Charles Reed. At Kelmscott Press, Morris designed and produced several typefaces for their publications, including the iconic Golden Type and Chaucer Type.
